about style as substance and this is a reality show where obama and romney will meet in the first time in nearly five years before their biggest audience of the campaign. the first 2008 presidential debate between the president and john mccain got seven times the audience of the highest rated 2012 republican primary debate. think about that. seven times. past debates show romney and obama have to worry about cut away shots that are less than flattering. in the past both candidates have come across as irritable, patronizing or disengaged. this was chris christie's advice to the candidates yesterday. >> what you do is go out and be yourself. and people either like it or don't. if they don't, they are going to vote for somebody else. not a tragedy. no one dies. >> finally speaking of debates, there was a barn burner last night in massachusetts where scott brown and democratic challenger elizabeth warren faced off in a debate. moderated by nbc's david gregory. it was tense from the outset. >> if you're going to comment on my record, i would at least have you refer to it -- excuse me. i'm n

salon's joan walsh. first, however, we have two new national polls on the presidential race. let's check the "hardball" scoreboard. according to a new "washington post"/abc news poll, president obama has a two-point lead holding there, 49%/47%. same score in the new politico poll. obama by two, 49%/47%. "the new york times" this weekend reported on the two campaigns' ongoing debate preps. here is what they said about romney's prep. quote, mr. romney's team has concluded that the debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. bob shrum, you have been on that particular role, preparing candidates for debate. what do you make of romney, a rather stiff customer to begin with, coming off as sort of a henny youngman or whatever, some sort of a don rickles with some zingers. i don't think of him as a zinger kind of guy where obama is expected to be left helpless. what do you make of that strategy? >> first of all, if you had it, you wouldn't announce it. it's kind of stupid. >> why are they leaking i

think, massachusetts is a poor training ground for presidential candidates because it's a weird culture up there. maybe the republicans run was not a good preparation for general election this year. anyway, in swing states the obama campaign has bombarded voters, as you said, with this powerful ad going after romney for his 47% putdown. let's take a look. >> 47% of the americans who vote for the president who are dependent, who believe they're victims, who believe the government has to care for them, who believes they're entitled to health care, food, housing, you name it, and they will vote for this president no matter what. so my job is not to worry about those -- i'll never take care of them. they should take care responsibility and take care of themselves. >> you look at this analytical, only three or four breaks, romney would be ahead right now, breaks going to obama's side. the romney performance overseas when he blew that thing with cameron. the masterful performance by bill clinton where he reset the clock on the economy. of course, this 47%. these breaks have been going

presidential debate. three republican candidates raise their hand saying we don't believe in evolution. where is the democratic equivalent of that? >> barack obama in 2008 said that vaccines might cause autism, and in 2008 it was well-known by then that vaccines didn't cause autism. hillary clinton said the same thing and so did john mccain. all three made the connection between thimerosol with a trace of mercury in it. that's been debunked. >> again, you're talking about dabbling in some theories, and completely grant you that it's troubling when you talk about people on the left that pushed this idea of a vaccine/autism link. that's troubling and needs to be called out. when you talk about as a party, mitt romney's in his acceptance speech at republican convention mocked the idea of combating climate change. he talked about obama promising to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. he mocked it, and it was a huge applause line. you have a republican party platform using scare quotes to talk about climate change. you have republicans in major positions of influence in the con
